Yesterday, I went down to Palos Verdes to paint. It was a little cloudy but the sun came out and it was a beautiful day. This is where a lot of people came to watch for whales. It's called the Point Vicente Interpretive Center. They have a little museum here with stuff about whales and Marineland!

Alex and I went to Paradise Cove....I have never been here as there's a 25 dollar parking fee but Alex was feeling rich and so we went....WOW, it's a beautiful beach here in Malibu. BTW, You can spend 20 dollars at the resturant and only have to pay 3 bucks for parking ....I might be off on the exact numbers here.

Alex and I went painting the other day. We originally wanted to paint the beach but it was too windy. So we came inland and painted this view off of Mulholland Drive. I forgot my Ultramarine Blue so Alex gave my some Phalo Turkcouse ( I know it's spelled wrong). Anyway, it was fun to try a new color. You can buy the painting here at my EBAY STORE

Well, I dragged Alex out to Solstice Canyon today as promised. It was a beautiful day as we made our attempts to try to capture the setting. My painting was the same view as my first Solstice Canyon painting but smaller. It was quite the challenge trying to get everything in the painting but not to overwork it!

The last few days I have gone out to Solstice Canyon in Malibu. I have driven by this place thousands of times but never went to take a look. Well, I am glad i did......It is such a beautiful oasis. Yesterday, It was about to rain and it was very calm here next to the creek and hearing the creek too was quite nice...just before it rained .......you could smell this strange smell........something was happening.....rain...anyway, I left in the middle of a nice Spring rain.....and today I went back again. But today...it was sunny and very windy.......but, because I am in this canyon...the wind was not an issue....I pretty much finished the painting but it needs some help....Tomorrow, Alex and I are planning to go back...Alex has not been here.........He's in for a treat...

On Wednesday after my Let's Paint TV show..I drove out to Malibu and painted one of the Lifeguard towers at Zuma Beach. Nice day though I seemed to get tired and cold at the end of the painting and I had no energy to paint another one.

Welcome to my new Blog on Plein Air Painting

Welcome to my new blog that I plan to update regularly. I have been painting en plein air (painting outdoors) for over 25 years. Plein air painting has gained a lot of popularity over the last few years but I have a major bone to pick with the miss use of the term. Mainly, that 90% of all plein air paintings are not painted on location! Most artists will go out and start the painting and then they take pictures and finish the painting back in their studios. Sometimes they just take a picture and never even attempt to paint on location. To me these artists are missing the whole point of painting on location.....the passion, the noises, the sun, cold, rain, people asking questions.... the battle that happens when you are out in the elements! And this is the special juice that makes a plein air painting! I can almost certainly pick out the fakes from the real ones when it comes to plein air painting. All I am saying is ...if you didn't paint it on location, at least 90% of it, don't call it Plein Air. Yes, there are times when you need to do some touch up to a painting you did en plein air....but if you are doing major construction, please call it a studio painting, or better yet, a plein air inspired painting.
